we celebrated cousin chase's 9th birthday yesterday. as always, we went around the room listing the reasons we love chase. grandma asked nash why he loves chase and, without hesitation, he replied, "because he's my boy." we all busted up and then nash quickly added, "i'm so funny."

he is.

later, nash played outside with chase. he stubbed his toe and after dad bandaged it up nash came and sat on the couch, crying. grandma asked him if she could hold him. and he replied, "no, cause i have a bandaid." we all busted up again. when i noticed boogers streaming from his nose i asked him, "hey, nash, how are your boogers?" and he said "oh, i'm just licking them." at least he's honest.

well, most of the time...

a few weeks ago we went to target to pick up a few things. nash and haven were each permitted to pick out one treat. nash picked chocolate chip cookies from the bakery. at the "buyer*" nash spotted a toy/candy fan. he's like a magnet to those things. he started wailing about the candy fan. i told him to put it back because he'd already picked the cookies. we checked out and started to leave. i took a quick look around me to make sure nash was coming and, upon seeing his face, immediately knew he was guilty of something. i told him he looked guilty and asked him what he did. "i didn't do everfing," he said. i wasn't convinced; i patted him down. nothing there. so we proceeded to the door. then i looked down at my feet and noticed a candy fan tucked under the cart. busted. i made him take it back to the nice lady at the "buyer" and say sorry. he cried the whole way there, the whole way back, and the whole way to the car while i, and the rest of the target shoppers chuckled. and that's the story of nash's first attempt at stealing (at least that i know of).

nash may enjoy make-up, dolls and playing kitchen, but he is beginning to dabble in man-stuff. his new favorite show is "mighty machines" (if you have netflix instant play, check it out, you will regret it!). and yesterday the city began tearing out our sidewalks. nash watched from the window for an hour or so, every so often exclaiming, "mama, this is so amazing." and, "wow, those are great machines!" here he is catching boogers with his tongue while watching the machines: and here he is making machine sounds. all boy, i tell ya. as i was posting these photos i noticed how much more copper there is in his left eye than the right. i asked him to come in here so i could look at his eyes and he said "but they're all blue so i can be booiful." so maybe he's a pretty boy.

just for the record, mr. nash now has two consecutive nights of sleeping in underwear (not a diaper) under his belt. and it is all his doing. when i said it was time to change into a diaper two nights ago, he said "no, i know how to sleep in my unnerwears." and he did. that's my boy!

nash's room has finally come together-or as close to "together" as it will get until we move. this weekend we were able to get the bookshelf i'd been wanting with some store credit i'd been saving up. it saved the room (visually)-and the kids somehow are very careful about putting things where they go. we'll see how long that lasts. i also did a little rearranging, got rid of the cradle, swapped rocking chairs, changed out the artwork, and made the little pennant banners above the windows. i had planned to make pelmet boxes for the windows, but now that these buntings are up i think it's enough to call it good and save the money. nash loves his new room-especially the light, which he leaves on all night.

some nights he manages to name every single person in our entire extended family. some nights he gets lazy and keeps the list very short including just me and bevie. he rarely includes havey anymore, although he usually still says "help me sleep good, wake up happy and be the best brother"-something's making me think he doesn't quite grasp that one yet. and it's always fun when he throws in something like "thanks for grandma giving me the presents."

dear nashy boy-

today you are three. not nine. part of me doesn't want you to ever be nine. part of me wants you to stay my little three-year-old dude forever. but another part of me can't wait to see you turn into a grown up boy. you have all the makings to be such a wonderful person.

yesterday we went to the shoe store with emmy. haven, little miss independent, went crazy. she was throwing shoes, running and screaming, spilling her mash-up. so i decided we better go. you weren't too happy about that. you threw yourself on the floor and screamed. so i took haven and said i would see you later. but you got up and followed me all the way to the car where we waited for emmy to finish shopping. and then you said, "mamma, are you happy?" and i said "no". and you said "mamma, are you mad?" and i said "yes". and then you said, "well, i will make you happy. i will eat lunch and carrots and make you happy." and then i may or may not have cried. you are so aware and so willing to do what it takes to make others happy, even eat your carrots.

there's a lot more to you. many things that make us all love you as much as we do. but most important is that you care about other people and want them to be happy. you're already doing pretty darn well for a three-year-old, so we'll leave it at that.

happy third birthday, little dude. we love you more than the world.

i have a confession: my kids watch a lot of tv. haven is an addict and nash just really likes it. and when i'm sick and tired it's just easier. so sue me. the good thing is that nash is actually learning quite a bit, so it helps me justify on those tv-watching-so-mom-can-get-one-thing-done days.

nash and i ran a quick errand to fedex office to print some things. afterward we got into the car and were heading home. we stopped at a stop sign and nash matter-of-factly pointed and said "that's an oxagon."

em and nash were sitting in the recliner in the sun room while em was doing some reading for school. she was reading obama's speech given to school children-the top of the paper said just that, "prepared remarks of president barack obama back to school event." nash looked at the paper and said "emmy, it's a school!" he then pointed to the word "school."

today i took nash to run a bunch of errands with me. at the last two or three stops i would tell him, "last stop and then we'll go home." but then i'd remember one more thing i needed to do and he was being so good that i ended up saying that a few times. as we finally pulled into the driveway nash exclaimed, "but we need to find the rainforest!" (dora)

he says several times a day "where should we go next?" and "that's a great idea!" (both from dora)

might i also remind you that he learned the abc's, most of his counting, spanish counting, and other randomness from the tv. it can't be all that bad, right?

a few days ago steve was heading out to go to work and school. nash asked him why he was going, so steve said he had to go make money. as soon as steve walked in the door, hours later, nash jumped up and asked excitedly, "did you get the monies?"

then he asked me if we were going to the store. hmmm....

speaking of monies, nash is really into putting a handful of monies into the pockets of his cargo shorts. he likes to go to the store and buy a tootsie roll (his go-to treat).

nash was sitting on his potty while steve was sitting on his reading a magazine. nash seemed perfectly content, kicking his legs, when all of the sudden he jumped up, ran out of the room and returned with a magazine for himself.

nash got his mini magnadoodle out, so mom spelled his name out for him "N-A-S-H, Nash." not too long after, nash was found "writing" on his magnadoodle and saying "nine, six, seven, eight, Nash."

one day mom said "one" so nash said "two." this was normal (remember, "one...shoe"), but after mom said "three" nash said "four"! what? can he count? mom got a little too excited, so nash quit right there. the next day after mom told dad about what happened, she asked nash to count. he counted to six all by himself! since then we've been working on counting with chocolate treats (chocolate chips). we lay them out in a row and nash counts them, then gets to eat one. he always skips three and seven. then he gets to nine and says "eat one?".

nash found mom's american express card in her purse. it has her picture on it, so he thought it was pretty cool. well, when mom went to costco a few days later, lo and behold her card was missing. she came home and asked nash where the card was. (he has a habit of hiding random things in random places; like his flashlight in the produce drawer of the fridge and mom's toothbrush in the oven drawer.) he usually will go right to the missing item and bring it back. two weeks later, the american express card was still missing. while mom was on the phone with grandma, nash took a picture frame apart and there was the card-nestled right in between the picture and the cardboard backing. he handed it to mom with a smile and a "welcome."

last week nash had one of those days where he just wouldn't stop talking. i was trying to get the house clean, so i had sort of tuned him out. he kept mentioning "baby sleeping" and i kept insisting that she wasn't sleeping, she was in the living room playing. well, i finally stopped for a second and watched what he was doing: he climbed up on his bed and began to pet and kiss his stuffed bunny while saying "shhh, nigh nigh." and then he slowly crept out of his room while whispering "shhh." he saw me watching and said matter-of-factly, "bunny sleepin." a few minutes later he got a startled/concerned look on his face and then said "bunny cryin," and ran into the room and started the whole process again. he's been "pretending" ever since.

andy & naomi gave nash a toy animal hospital for his birthday. he's fallen in love with the little stuffed "kitty kitty." one night at around four a.m. he woke up screaming. i ran in and he was screaming for "kitty kitty," so i went and found it (stashed in his train) and took it to him. he took it and went right back to sleep with a smile on his face. then a few nights later the same thing happened, only kitty kitty and bunny were both in bed with him (along with several books, blocks, and his flashlight). he wouldn't stop screaming and trying to calm him down just seemed to make him worse, so i turned to the attention to bunny and kitty kitty. i tucked them in and gave them night night kisses. it worked like magic. nash layed right back down and went to sleep.

every morning nash comes into our room and gives us both kisses on the "yips". then he says, "mommy hold you," and cuddles for just a minute.

nash took haven's blanket to her and when he came back he said "best brother." he also pats himself on the back after putting his dishes away or cleaning up his messed by saying "best helper." he used to be a very good helper, but now he's starting to get a little jealous of the attention haven gets and that haven gets to play with his toys. he grabs them from her and says "don't touch, baby." he's very bossy and tells us to "sit down" and "stay right there."

nash is finally enjoying the pool! he loved it last year, but up until recently this year he has thrown crazy fits anytime we get him near the water (despite his love for tubs). he's finally relaxed and has been having so much fun with the cousins, splashing and banging sticks. he's even jumping in and is becoming fearless all-too-fast. he loves the thrill of the jump-you can see it in his face just before he lets go. you can tell it's still a bit scary, but he's a brave little boy!

it was cloudy and cool today, so we decided to go to the zoo again. nash invited james along. the two looked so cute in their matching shirts (they didn't plan it) with their big blue eyes-they could have been twins. it was kind of fun to switch kids with april and hold james (at least for me-but april is pregnant and nash is a tank, so it was probably not as fun for her.)

up until i saw nash smile for the first time, i can't think of one instant in my life where i thought to myself "wow. this makes it all worth it." but now i feel like i'm having these experiences on a daily basis:

nash amazes me with the things he knows. i find myself saying aloud: "did he really just do that? did he really just say that?" and then testing him to see if he knew what he did. last night i told nash (as i often do) "i love you." he quickly said something back that sounded quite a bit like he told me the same thing. after a few minutes of testing it was confirmed. he told me he loves me: "i you." my heart skipped a beat.

zoo trip two

we got a year membership to the zoo so i can see the animals anytime i want. it was cloudy today, so mommy thought it might be a nice time to go. this time i got to see almost all of the primates-they were all outside playing! except this guy, who was sleeping hanging from the window.

mommy asked me to show her where the gorilla's pee pee is. as a good boy, i was quick to oblige.

this was haven's first trip to the zoo. she rode in mommy's carrier like a baby kangaroo! she was pretty tired though...

dada put me on his shoulders so i could see the big rhino.

all the excitement had me pretty tuckered out. i fell asleep the second we got back into the car.

nash's first zoo trip wasn't as exciting as i'd hoped, but hey, at least we got out of the house! we waited until the heat of the day so not only were we dying in the heat, but lots of the animals were hiding. then nash decided he'd rather play with the stroller and eat than look at animals. on top of that, the camera died about a half hour into the visit.

while gramma & grampa were here i discovered two new loves. first: sitting on steps. but it's only fun when someone sits beside me. i drove grampa crazy making him sit on steps with me. inside and out.

g&g thought i might like my own chair, so they bought me a little adirondack for the porch (it matches mommy's set) and a little wicker chair for inside. within an hour after mommy brought them home from the store i banged my head up pretty good and bit my tongue so hard it bled. i've gotta figure out how these chair things work.

i also discovered that if i spin around a lot i get really dizzy. i think it's so funny.

april and james came up today and the four of us went to liberty park. we're so lucky to live by such a great park! the playground is huge-although nash was still too scared to try any of the fun stuff (except riding down the slide on mom's lap, which was not fun for me!). instead, he found a random bunny statue with the ears broken off and decided to give it kisses. what can i say, the boy loves animals. he also had a lengthy conversation on the phone while pacing through the grass (my dad is a huge pacer while talking on the phone).

after the playground we strolled over to the duck pond and fed the "ducks". finally, a little fearless streak came out in the boy! he LOVED it and fed them straight from his hand (even i'm nervous about doing that).

it was fun for nash to have a friend. he and james are only a month apart and are like peas in a pod. they are just about the same size with slightly large heads and are in about the same place with vocab and gestures. it was so cute to see them together-even though they are both in a sort of "loner" phase and didn't exactly play together. they took notes from eachother and i bet if we keep up with playdates they will be great friends.

nash's vocabulary building seems to have slowed down, so lately i've been trying to pick a few words a week to really focus on. two weeks ago it was "shoe," "apple," and "juice." he got shoe down real well and will say it when asked most of the time. the other two are hit or miss, although he can definitely say them (and "apple" is sooo cute).

last night around ten, two hours past bedtime, i was trying to get nash to come to me and he just wouldn't listen. so i decided to count to three, which i've never really done. i said...'One.......two....." and just as i was about to say "three," nash said "shoe." i couldn't help but laugh.

nash completed his first 5k (2008 Walk MS) this morning. yay buddy! he was sooo excited to be outside that we (emilie & i) had to keep him strapped into the stroller until the start. we didn't want him to burn out too quickly. he made it from n temple to 6th north before losing energy (which i think is pretty awesome). we kept telling him that he needed to pace himself, but....

i figure since haven is coming in under six weeks i better start getting creative about outsourcing the dirty work around here. nash is working out quite well ( i just have to get over the fact that the utensils aren't organized in their respective slots):

nash has also merged his love for feeding lexi and his love for rock-throwing into one convenient activity (one that lets me stay inside and out of this damned april weather -seriously? april and it snowed?). his laugh kills me:

nash is now 16 months and only two months away from being a big brother!

number of teeth: 10, with the 11th poking through (a little crooked?)

new words: tractor, apple, thank you, love you (i you). he says thank you a lot-em taught him. although he seems to have it backwards. em taught him the phrase by saying it to him each time he would hand her something. well, now he says it when he hands "you" something instead of when "you" hand him something. but it's still dang cute. the others have been said on occassion but are not used daily. his favorite word is "hi," and he says it to EVERYONE he sees. in church he walks from person to person touching each person's hand and saying "hi." the old people love him!

he's a natural show-off and when people are over he does new things to get attention. brad and gina were over one night and nash would not go to bed until we pretended to say goodbye to them. brad and gina actually had to leave and hide on the porch. then he went right to sleep. speaking of sleep-we went through a really rough phase, but he's now back to sleeping like a champ. only problem is that he has to have 1.) his blanket 2.) a bottle 3.) his binki and 4.) his ocean wonders aquarium turned on. he seems to have a preference for the order of those things and gets a bit testy if i don't do it right (and i can't seem to figure out the order!). as i'm leaving the room (always saying "nigh nigh love you") he says "hi." I LOVE IT.

we've discovered that part of nash's sleeping issues might stem from the fact that he is a sleep-talker/walker. the other night around midnight we heard chattering through the bedroom wall. when we went into the room to see what was going on, nash was sitting in the corner of his crib. he was slumped over and was talking to his foot. when he didn't respond to us being in the room, we realized what was going on. steve said "nash" real loud and all of the sudden nash snapped out of it and looked at us with a big smile and a twinkle in his eye and said "hi." we all died laughing. so anyway, we think he probably has nightmares too-which would account for his random freakouts in the middle of the night.

he still loves to go on walks and to the park, although he doesn't like the "rides." he'd rather push the swing than be in it. he likes to spin the merry-go-round, but won't ride on it. and he loves the sand. on walks he is often surrounded by the neighbors dogs and giggles and pets them. i'm starting to worry about when mean dogs come near him, he has no fear of them. he and lexi are still great friends and i think lexi is starting to realize he might be her only ally. today nash wanted her to come play in the sunroom and he baited her with an animal cracker. i was pretty amazed at his tactic and it worked!

when he wants something, nash still does his annoying squawking sound, although he is starting to replace it with more frequent hand tugging-he comes and grabs my finger then points to what he wants. another favorite-it makes me melt. what a great development! the squawking was getting on my last nerve all too often.

every morning dada gets nash out of the crib, changes his diaper, and gives him a bottle or breakfast. shortly after, nash comes in to our room and walks up to me and says "hi," and then climbs in bed for a quick cuddle. it's my favorite time of day. he'll then play by himself for a bit, checking in for a quick cuddle every so often. if he doesn't come in the room to check in i'll hear a "hi" from the other room-he'll keep saying it till i respond.

and that's nash at 16 months. he's still my favorite.

nash is becoming quite the little character. he can go from sweet & pleasant (making cute cooing noises, giving {which means getting} kisses, smiling and laughing) to total nightmare in just a few seconds (arching his back, squawking, and glaring at whomever is in sight). he knows what he wants but doesn't have the vocabulary to tell me what that is and i think it frustrates him. he understands most of what i say and when he's in "sweet-boy" mode he'll do whatever i tell him to. when he's in "demon" mode i get an earful from him.

he loves to be outside and smiles and giggles at the birds. he hates to be held outside and just wants to run. but only in the direction he chooses-try to turn him around (to protect him from things like the busy state street) and it's fits and squawking on the sidewalk. he's a determined little guy and we are trying to figure out how to encourage his determination while still disciplining him and teaching him to listen to us.

nash is very observant and will pick up on things you'd least expect him to. he knows how to properly apply each make-up item in my make-up case. he mimics things when you don't even realize it. he loves to dance-a cute little squat is his classic move, but sometimes he'll throw in a funny little twist. he loves music and sways to slow songs. he thinks pockets are pretty neat, but he can't quite figure out how to put things in them by himself, so he just presses things against the pocket really hard.

both grandpa's have expressed their concern for nash's taste in beverages. although he appears to be drinking a refreshing caffeinated beverage, he is in fact drinking nothing. the can is empty. we should have mentioned that sooner. do not fret, grandfathers, we are not corrupting your grandson. although i do recall a certain grandpa letting nash sip coke through a straw at only six months! and penning him with a tattoo to match steven's! just throwing it out there!

an update on my skillz

daddy started law school this week, so i spent a lot of time with mommy and now i am super attached. i'm driving her crazy! luckily i came up with some new tricks to charm her-i can click my tongue and give her big wet kisses! not to mention that my crawling skills are unsurpassed (big word for an almost-nine-month-old, huh?). i also enjoy pulling up on anything i can, including lexi. and i LOVE to get into lexi's food bowl when mommy and daddy aren't looking. lucky for me, lexi is the nicest doggy ever and doesn't get mad at me.

we went to stadium of fire tonight and i was the best baby ever. even mommy & daddy were surprised- i wasn't scared or anything! it must be because the fireworks were just like the ones on my baby einstein movie. the only time i got fussy was when grandpa bought everyone slushies and i didn't get one. i was mad, but mommy shared so everything worked out. this was the best fourth of july ever!
